What Is Sinus Lift?

Located behind the cheeks and above the upper teeth, the maxillary sinuses are empty, air-filled spaces. In some cases, the roots of natural upper teeth extend into these sinuses. When these teeth are extracted, a thin wall of bone often remains between the maxillary sinus and the mouth. This thin bone wall poses challenges for placing dental implants, as implants require sufficient bone support.

To address this issue, a sinus lift is a commonly performed bone grafting procedure for patients with bone loss in the upper jaw. This procedure aims to stimulate bone growth in the floor of the maxillary sinus, above the gum line’s bony ridge that supports the teeth in the upper jaw. By promoting new bone growth, dental implants can be successfully placed and secured in the augmented bone.

Am I a Sinus Lift Procedure Candidate?

Are You a Candidate for a Sinus Lift Procedure?

If you have multiple missing teeth at the back of your jaw, significant bone loss in the posterior region, tooth loss due to a birth defect or condition, or require support for dental implants for missing maxillary teeth, you may be a candidate for a sinus lift procedure.

The Sinus Lift Procedure:

The procedure involves making a small incision in the premolar or molar area to expose the jawbone. A careful opening is created in the bone, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted. The space beneath is filled with bone grafting material, which can be sourced from your own body or other sources. Synthetic materials may also be used. After the bone graft is placed, the incision is sutured, and healing begins. Over a few months, the graft fuses with the existing jawbone, providing a stable foundation for dental implants. In some cases, if there is enough bone for implant stability, sinus augmentation and implant placement can be done in one procedure. If there is insufficient bone, the sinus augmentation is performed first, followed by a maturation period before implant placement.

The sinus lift procedure offers a solution for patients who had limited options like loose dentures. At Prestige Oral and Facial Surgery Center, we provide various procedures, including bone grafting, dental implants, exposure, facial trauma, oral pathology, orthognathic surgery, pre-prosthetic surgery, sinus lifts, socket preservation, tooth extraction, impacted wisdom teeth removal, Botox Cosmetic, and frenectomy.
